Bo Lozoff Kindness and Rehabilitation
Contributing Expert

Author and speaker Bo Lozoff is co-founder and director of the Human Kindness Foundation and co-director of the Human Kindness Foundation’s best known project — the Prison-Ashram Project. The focus of the Prison-Ashram Project is to help prisoners and prison staff throughout the world turn inward and use their harsh environments to develop wisdom and compassion.

Bo’s first book, “We’re All Doing Time,” was named by the Village Voice as one of the top 10 books everyone in the world should read and has been called “the Convict’s Bible” by prisoners and prison staff alike around the world. It is seen by prisoners as a “true” self-improvement and rehabilitation book revolving squarely around unselfishness and compassion. “We’re All Doing Time” is in its 18th printing and is available in several languages.

Bo Lozoff has also offered numerous other books including “Lineage and Other Stories”, “Just Another Spiritual Book”, “Deep & Simple: A Spiritual Path for Modern Times”, “It’s a Meaningful Life – It Just Takes Practice” and his children’s book “The Wonderful Life of a Fly Who Couldn’t Fly.”

In addition to his books, Bo Lozoff is also an accomplished singer and songwriter with two CDs, “Stumbling Towards The Light” and “Whatever It Takes.”

In 1999, Bo Lozoff received an honorary doctorate degree from one of the oldest and most respected divinity schools in the nation, the Chicago Theological Seminary, for his commitment for bringing “God’s reign of mercy and justice” into the world.

Bo and his wife, Sita Lozoff, founded the Kindness House, an interfaith spiritual community in North Carolina which serves as a parole plan for prisoners from all over the United States. Bo Lozoff spends time on tour, speaking in prisons, giving public talks and performing singer / songwriting concerts across the country.

Favorite Quotes and Thoughts
from
Bo Lozoff

  • We're all stumbling towards the light with varying degrees of grace at any given moment.

  • The cause of all our personal problems and nearly all the problems of the world can be summed up in a single sentence: Human life is very deep and our modern, dominant lifestyle is not.

  • In the midst of global crises such as pollution, wars and famine, kindness may be too easily dismissed as a "soft" issue, or a luxury to be addressed after the urgent problems are solved. But kindness is the greatest need in all those areas — kindness toward the environment, toward other nations, toward the needs of people who are suffering. Until we reflect basic kindness in everything we do, our political gestures will be fleeting and fragile. Simple kindness may be the most vital key to the riddle of how human beings can live with each other in peace and care properly for this planet we all share.
